P&DG were instructed by Morgan Lovell to prepare a Planning and Listed Building Consent application for the Semaphore Tower at the Portsmouth Naval Base.

Client: Morgan Lovell

Size: Office Building

LPA: Portsmouth City Council

Expertise: Heritage Planning, Listed Buildings, Planning Applications

Pre-application engagement was necessary with Portsmouth City Council to determine Semaphore Tower’s character as a building of special architectural or historic interest. Semaphore Tower forms a wing of the main building which comprises of the Grade II Listed Lion Gate, in addition to surrounding Listed Buildings nearby. Through collaboration it was concluded that the wing is considered to be Listed by virtue of attachment. The application was for the installation of seven condenser units, whereby a thorough heritage and planning assessment was conducted.

The success of the application led to P&DG submitting a further application a year later, for further alterations to the building.
