P&DG were instructed by Via East Midlands Limited to provide planning support to a scheme of flood defence works at Potwell Dyke, Southwell.

Client: Via East Midlands Limited for Nottinghamshire County Council

Size: 3 ha

LPA: Nottinghamshire County Council

Expertise: Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), Pre-Planning Advice

In addition to preparing the planning statement, P&DG co-ordinated the undertaking of Environmental Impact Assessment and preparation of the resulting Environmental Statement. The scheme, involving the construction of a large bund and flow control device, allowing water to be retained at times of storm, extended across an area of popular public open space of significant heritage interest, being in proximity to Southwell Minster, the Bishop’s Palace and underlain by the remains of Roman settlement.

P&DG’s insight into the complexities of competing priorities and understanding of a broad range of environmental and technical issues, aided scheme design and the robust assessment of environmental effects.

A planning application was subsequently submitted for the works, forming part of a wider programme to reduce flood risk across the town.
