P&DG were instructed by Nottingham Trent University (NTU) to collate, prepare, and support a planning application for a new student hall of residence on the Brackenhurst Campus.

Client: Nottingham Trent University

Size: 1,155 sq meters

LPA: Newark and Sherwood

Expertise: Placemaking, Project Management and Coordination, Stakeholder Engagement

The new residences comprised of 200 student bedrooms and ancillary welfare facilities within 6,060 sqm gross floor space. These additional campus residences will support NTU’s increasing student numbers and demand at Brackenhurst. The accommodation will also serve existing student numbers, as many students at NTU Brackenhurst prefer to remain on Campus in halls of residence in second and third years.

The site’s location on the exposed edge of the campus, directly overlooking the historic town of Southwell, required careful handling and negotiation with the Town Council over issues such visual appearance and lighting. Several of the accommodation blocks sit just beyond the boundary of the Southwell Cricket Club pitch, an assessment of cricket ball trajectories was required to ensure that the windows of the residences would not have to be replaced after every match.

The campus residences are part of an ongoing programme of Campus improvements which are fundamental to the wider strategy and key ambition to promote the social, economic, and educational development for both the University and the wider District.
